Mount Carmel continues to strengthen its commitment to environmental sustainability and care for creation through a wide range of eco projects and learning opportunities.
Over the past year, pupils have played a leading role in developing the Eco Garden, supporting biodiversity and tree-planting projects, expanding the school polytunnel, and participating in Eco Club activities and environmental campaigns. These initiatives help students put Catholic Social Teaching into action by caring for the environment and serving the wider community.
The school's growing eco programme also supports pupils' personal development by building confidence, teamwork, leadership and responsibility. A structured Year 7 Eco Club now provides regular opportunities to learn about sustainable food production, biodiversity, soil science, composting, horticulture and conservation.
Significant progress has also been made in reducing the school's environmental impact through investment in renewable energy, including additional solar panels, EV charging infrastructure and energy efficiency measures. Strong partnerships with organisations such as Let's Go Zero, the Prospects Foundation, local churches, community groups and partner primary schools continue to enhance learning and environmental action.
Looking ahead, the school's Eco Action Plan focuses on three key priorities:
- Improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.
- Expanding biodiversity, outdoor learning and Eco Garden provision.
- Reducing waste and increasing recycling and sustainable purchasing.
The school's sustainability work makes an increasingly important contribution to Catholic Life, personal development and the wider mission of the school. Through environmental leadership, outdoor learning and community partnerships, Mount Carmel is helping young people become responsible stewards of God's creation while building a more sustainable future.
