Mount Carmel repeated a successful project for Year 5 pupils from some of our partner primary schools during the Spring term. The CREST Superstar Award is accredited by the British Science Association and requires eight hours of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) hands-on enquiry based activities to complete the award.
Mount Carmel invited 70 Year 5 pupils from St. Mary’s Oswaldtwistle and Hippings Methodist to Mount Carmel to participate in Design Technology, Science and Maths workshops with a theme of ‘journeys’.
The pupils investigated structures such as bridges then designed and built a model of their own structure during Design Technology workshops.
In Science the pupils tested the journey of a molecule after undertaking science laboratory ‘training’ which included the lighting of bunsen burners.
Pupils also designed a devise to hold an egg working to a tight budget. These were then tested at great height for their effectiveness.
During the two day workshops the pupils experienced life at high school and enjoyed the delicious food served in Mount Carmel’s Twelve Star Diner.
A Celebration Evening for pupils involved in this award is planned for Thursday 11th July 6.00-7.30pm. We look forward to seeing the pupils again with their parents and families and have a special evening planned for them all.
