Mount Carmel Summer Awards Evening took place on 9 July 2026 to celebrate the achievements of pupils in year groups 7 - 10.
The evening began with a welcome and opening remarks from Deputy Headteacher Miss Farrelly followed by an extract from the Mount Carmel 2026 production of 'Frozen'.
Headteacher Mr Bowers in his last address before he retires addressed visitors thanking them for attending the event to celebrate the achievements of pupils as they receive awards for attainment and achievement in their subjects, for role model awards, pastoral awards and the prestigious Logan Wood Memorial Award. He also thanked them for the support and strong home school partnerships that helps pupils succeed in school.
Mr Bowers then thanked all staff for being a dedicated team who work tirelessly to ensure that all pupils get the very best possible education in all aspects of school life.
Mr Bowers thanked Chair of Governors Mr Andrew Dabrowski and the Governing Body saying we are fortunate to have such a dedicated team of Governors supporting the school. He concluded by saying that the school has transformed in many ways by staff, Governors, parents and pupils and in his absence hoped they could all walk forward together united in faith and learning.
The evening showcased the talents of current Mount Carmel pupils with subject awards presented by Pastoral Leaders from each year group. Role model awards were then presented one from each form group. Reasons for nominations for these awards included excellent commitment to their studies, being caring, helpful and trustworthy. Comments also included being active participants in school activities, helping others who are struggling and being positive role models. Pastoral Awards were also presented to pupils from each year group.
Pupils who had been awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze awards in the National Biology Challenge were presented with their certificates and the ELIAS Leadership Awards were also presented.
The final award of the evening was the award dedicated to the memory of much loved pupil Logan Wood. Year 9 pupil Cailub C. was announced as the worthy winner.
Here is the statement outlining the reason for the decision;
"Cailub's life changed dramatically at the end of Year 8 when what appeared to be flu-like symptoms and extreme fatigue led to the shocking diagnosis of severe, life-threatening heart failure. Following months in hospital, supported by machines to help his heart function, and facing the possibility of a heart transplant, he and his family endured an incredibly difficult and uncertain period. He was later admitted to Newcastle Hospital where he successfully received a heart transplant and is now continuing his recovery with long-term medication. Despite these extraordinary challenges, Cailub has shown remarkable resilience, courage and determination throughout. We are immensely proud of the strength he has demonstrated and want to recognise the inspirational way he has faced such a life-changing experience while working towards his return to school in September."
Andrew Dabrowski, Chair of Governors addressed the visitors congratulating the pupils on their achievements and efforts saying they make the school and their families proud. He then thanked Mr Bowers on behalf of all the Governors saying he leaves more than just a building; he leaves a legacy of a family of faith & learning.
To conclude the evening a vote of thanks to the guests was made by Olly V. and Isabelle S. Mount Carmel Head Boy and Head Girl.
