The Mount Carmel community gathered together to celebrate Mass in thanksgiving for the retirement of Mr Xavier Bowers at the end of the Summer term, who has served as Headteacher from 2011 to 2026 with dedication, vision and faith-filled leadership.
We were delighted to welcome Monsignor John Daly as principal celebrant, and Fr Francis Wadsworth as concelebrant. We extend our sincere thanks to both clergy for leading such a prayerful and memorable celebration, and especially to Fr Francis for his constant support of the school throughout the years.
The Mass was attended by current and former staff, pupils, governors, family members and friends, all of whom came together to give thanks for Mr Bowers' fifteen years of outstanding service to Mount Carmel. During his time as Headteacher, he has guided the school with commitment and integrity, ensuring that its Catholic mission has remained at the heart of all that it does.
The school choir enhanced the liturgy with their beautiful singing, helping to create a truly uplifting atmosphere of thanksgiving and celebration. Special thanks also go to Raiden in Year 8, who served reverently at the altar throughout the Mass.
A particularly moving moment came at the conclusion of the celebration when Mr Bowers was presented with the Benemerenti Medal, awarded by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. The Benemerenti Medal is one of the highest honours bestowed by the Catholic Church upon members of the clergy and laity who have demonstrated long and exceptional service to the Church and to Catholic life. The award recognises distinguished commitment, dedication and faithful service, and it is a fitting tribute to Mr Bowers' many years of leadership and contribution to Catholic education. To receive this papal honour is a significant achievement and a source of great pride for both Mr Bowers and the wider Mount Carmel community.
We thank everyone who played a part in organising this special Mass and ensuring that it was such a fitting celebration of Mr Bowers' ministry and leadership. From those involved in the planning and preparation of the liturgy, to the musicians, readers, servers and all who attended, your contributions helped make the occasion truly memorable.
As Mr Bowers begins a new chapter, we offer him our heartfelt thanks for all he has given to Mount Carmel over the past fifteen years. We wish him every happiness, good health and many blessings in his retirement.
Ad multos annos, Mr Bowers, and thank you for your outstanding service to Catholic education.
